Some News and the Things I Don’t Know
First off, very happy as I spoke with my editor this morning and we got the particulars of the new contract all ready to go. Four books again, and I’m basically all scheduled out for the next twelve months which is a very secure feeling! (New contract is so sparkalay!!!)
I have a partial in with her now, and I’ll spend the wait time working on some proposals. I’m really excited about the 2nd book we discussed…well, I’m excited about the first one too. And the other two, even though the ideas are vague. Oh, I just find it all exciting. Lots of fabulous, passionate, glamorous ideas are swirling around in my head. I can’t think of anything better than writing about two people overcoming their issues and finding love with each other. *swoons*
To write what you love is such a wonderful thing. And that’s what I get to do. I’m always excited about the next book, the next idea, and of course, the finished product. The thing that comes from all that cookie-eating-angst-ridden-revision work. In short: Love this job. Everything about it.
The WIP I’m starting on is my 7th Presents and I still feel…new. Unsure. I was totally plagued by doubt crows before sending off this partial, maybe because it needs work, maybe just because it was my first submission to my new editor, and it felt like a first date*.
I learn so much with each book I write, and that throws all I don’t know into sharp relief. It’s okay though. It’s a very exciting thing, knowing you have so much learning ahead. At least it is for me.
So much of the advice I give here is advice I’m giving myself. Things I need to take to heart and remember. And a lot of it is simply MY take on things. I’m not the authority by any means, all I can do is talk about what has and hasn’t worked for me. But if it helps anyone at all, I’m always so pleased.
It’s so nice to have some people on board to share my journey with me. ๐
I’m hoping to have some new cover art this week (yay!) and I’m really excited to say that The Inherited Bride is the #5 bestseller of the week on Mills and Boon UK! (Yay again!)
*sudden subject change* Also, I have a question! (yes, I may be thinking of using this in a book..so don’t answer if it’s your idea and you don’t want me to steal it! LOL) What are some of your favorite locations in books? Or, what are some of your favorite locations that are underused? (I like an unusual setting. My UK April is partly set in Thailand and my UK August is partly set in Malawi)
Thanks!
Maisey
*Only one chance to make a first impression…guess what I did when I subbed to my editor? I sent her the WRONG PARTIAL. EEEEK! It was fixed quickly thought but…egh. *scurries away*

So glad your chat went well, despite the teeny, tiny email glitch.
It really is so much more fun to have people to share with. I’ve only been writing seriously for a few months, but I am constantly amazed at how warm, kind and supportive the romance writing community is. When someone has, say, a new book contract to celebtate or even a contest final, there is never a shortage of people to congratulate the happy author.
As for exotic destinations, if I were traveling I’d choose Tahiti or Belize. My sister has been to Belize a couple of times now. The snorkeling is amazing.
I’m so excited to see (and maybe help pick) the exotic location!
Ooh…Belize…the possibilities…Also…yes! The community is so supportive. I love that!
Thanks, Haven. ๐ You know you get a vote!
Hi Maisey,
First, Congratulations on the new contract! Waka Waka girl! It’s time for jigging around!!!
I’m sharing your journey from start and even if I don’t leave comments, I lurk around and read your posts, so yes, it does help.
OK, location? What about exotic, sundrenched, with white sandy beaches the sea and surf, FIJI?!
I’m here to answer any questions you might have.

Congrats on the new contract Miss Maisey!! x
Thank you, Nas! And thanks for sticking with me. ๐ Also…mmm…Fiji…*daydreams* *puts on sunscreen*
and thank you, Miss Lacey! ๐
Yeah, big yays girl!! You so deserve it! And as to the location…I have very fond memories of getting engaged in Prague. It’s verrrry romantic. But if you want exoticism, Bangkok! Though I am thinking naughty thoughts about Bangkok and no, you don’t want to know..;-)
Great news on the 4 book contract Maisey. Who is your new editor?
Have you stolen mine? I’m working with Sally and she’s fab.
Exotic locations, depends on the definition of exotic.
I’m thinking of doing my next on one of the Amazon medical ships. Fab setting!
But not quite appropriate for a Presents I fear….
How about Hawaii…….
Congratulations on the contract, Maisey-that’s just fabulous!
How about a ‘privately owned’ island? Launch or helicopter access only? m
Jackie, I can read your mind…and I’m having the same thoughts. Oh dear…
Susan, I have not stolen the lovely Sally. ๐ I have Megan Bassett and she’s absolutely wonderful. Lots of nice ladies in that office!
Margie S, oh, I do love a private island…*daydreams*
I was thinking an exclusive island. Hmm Bali or that one off the coast of California whose name I don’t know. I also scribbled the name of an island off Argentina (I think) whose name I can no longer remember somewhere …
I am no use this evening, although for me probably one of my most romantic moments happened in Greenwich Park, London ๐
I’m a sucker for any destination that’s warm and sunny. Last year I visited Mozambique, which was interesting and very beautiful, although very basic (don’t expect widespread cell phone coverage or good roads!)
I’d also love to read more books set in the Carribean, Hawaii or Florida Keys.
Wow Maisey! Congrats on the contract. I’m sure that eases your mind and allows you to think of new heroes. Working on number 7? I must confess I get confused with the UK and US release dates. I need to look for book 2 of yours.
Exotic locales – is Paris too overdone? Maybe in winter? An artist heroine perhaps? Some kind of mountain destination where the characters have no choice but to deal with their problems and cozy up?
I too lurk more than post, but today demanded a comment. I enjoy the insights you give to the writing life. I also read your post about Mr Yates. What a wonderful story of how you two got together.
Oh, do you mean Catalina, Joanne? My Aunt and Uncle love it there. A lot of my family is in Southern California. ๐
Romy, that sounds lovely! And of course, you can’t lose with the beach. One of my fave settings to write!
Marcie, good to see you delurked! Paris is a location I like to write too. ๐ And in the US you aren’t behind on reading at all! An Accidental Birthright is book two and that’s out in April, and then The Inherited Bride (book three) is in May in the US.
Maisey – Had I looked at your Coming Soon page BEFORE I posted I would have had my answer! I should have come back and commented again. I do appreciate you taking time to answer!
Oh, no problem, Marcie! It all gets very confusing, I know…
I have skin that burns if the lightbulb wattage is too high, so island destinations have never been high on my list but if you are looking for islands in the sun – Tahiti. There’s an island called Vanilla Island (Taha’a) where they have vanilla plantations; another known as the royal heart of Polynesia (Raiatea) which is the only place on earth to see the tiare apetahi flower; and of course Bora Bora with those amazing huts over the water…….can you hear my skin sizzling?
I did like Jackie’s mention of Prague but I’d vote for Cannes in France or Corfu in Greece or somewhere in Africa (probably all before the island setting too)!
Congrats on the new contract – great start to 2011.
Elissa *skin sizzles* my pale sister, I feel your pain. In Orlando this year, I am not exaggerating, I wore SPF 100. I didn’t tan at all. But I didn’t burn either!
I have to say…you know your islands and Taha’a sounds gorgeous! I had so much fun writing my African setting in my last MS. Lake Malawi is GORGEOUS. Also, love France as a setting and OH I haven’t done Greece yet! (so much awesome…)
